If there’s one thing that remains true from childhood through our golden years, it’s that nothing tastes quite as good as an ice cream cone on a summer’s day.
July is National Ice Cream Month, but do we really need an excuse to get out and indulge in a sweet, frozen treat? Maybe not, but having an excuse certainly doesn’t hurt. With the spirit of the season in mind, we’ve put together a list of five must-indulge ice cream shops in Ohio’s Largest Playground!
Located in Downtown Mason, Cincy Sammys has perfected the art of satisfying sweet tooths. As you might be able to guess from their name, Cincy Sammys specializes in ice cream sandwiches — offering 5-6 rotating cookie flavors, 8 ice cream choices, an array of sauces and toppings and endless combination possibilities. But this shop isn’t just for ice cream lovers, it’s for dog lovers too. Their name pays tribute not just to their fabulous menu, but also to one of their three “Founding Pups.” Samson, Clark, and Ruth’s portraits all hang inside the shop. They’re not begging for a taste of your sandwich, but they’re not not begging either.
Whit’s Frozen Custard has been a staple in Downtown Lebanon for over 15 years and is a repeat-winner of the Best of Warren County’s Best Sweet Treat category. Located in the heart of historic Lebanon, this shop is perfectly placed for an indulgent cone after dinner or after an afternoon of shopping the town’s boutique scene. In addition to their already-packed menu, Whit’s always features both a flavor of the week and a flavor of the month. With their custard made fresh daily, it’s no wonder why this ice cream shop has become such a fixture in town.
Picture it: you’ve been pedaling hard down the Little Miami Scenic Trail, enjoying the view of its namesake river while working up a sweat. The sun is hot, and all you can think is how something cold would really hit the spot right now. Enter: Miranda’s Ice Cream Shoppe. Located on the Little Miami Scenic Trail in downtown Morrow, this shop is perfectly placed to offer trail-goers a bit of relief in the form of a sweet frozen treat. Because they source their ice cream from right here in Ohio, Miranda’s proudly represents Warren County on the Ohio Ice Cream Trail, the definitive guide to a state-wide ice cream tour.
And did we mention their mascot is a unicorn?
Listen, there are institutions and then there are institutions. Considering K&W Drive-In has been doling out scoops for more than 60 years in downtown Springboro, they definitely qualify as the latter. But this local favorite is hardly a one-trick pony — they’re serving up a full menu in addition to soft serve ice cream, shakes, sundaes and slushies, making them the perfect place to be on a warm summer night.
When it comes to a cafe with small-town charm to spare, not many can hold a candle to Butter Churn Cafe in downtown Waynesville. You can’t help but be drawn to their beautiful blue storefront after an afternoon of exploring Waynesville’s shops, and their full menu will leave even the pickiest taste buds satisfied. Just be sure to leave room for dessert — a scoop of Youngs Dairy ice cream to top off a perfect day.
