Sporting Events to Bring More Than 14,000 to Warren County Memorial Day Weekend

Warren County, Ohio (May 17, 2017) – More than 14,000 athletes, coaches and supporters from across the nation will make their way to Warren County, Ohio, this Memorial Day Weekend to participate in a wide variety of locally hosted events, according to Warren County Sports, a department of the Warren County Convention & Visitors Bureau (WCCVB).

Several highly attended tournaments, including the USA Ultimate College Nationals, the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Boys State Tennis Championships, the Nike Midwest Showdown Basketball Tournament and the NCCAA Division I Baseball Championships will be in the county over the last weekend of May, bringing with them those thousands of participants and spectators.Ben Huffman, Director of Sports Marketing for the WCCVB, estimates the influx of sports-related visitors will generate approximately $5.5M in economic impact for the county, while also accounting for nearly 14,000 room nights at local hotels and bed & breakfasts throughout the week.

“Sports travel is one of the fastest growing sectors in the entire travel industry, because when coaches and athletes hit the road for tournaments, they rarely do so alone,” Huffman said. “Parents, kids, families and fans often tag along for the fun, and that provides a terrific boost not only for each individual event, but for our entire county as a host destination.”

Memorial Day Weekend projects to be among the busiest weekends of the year for Warren County Sports, which anticipates record numbers in 2017.Phillip S. Smith, President & CEO of the WCCVB, attributes much of Warren County’s success in the sports travel sector to the region’s off-the-field offerings.“What really sets us apart as a sporting destination is the fact that when the final whistle blows each day our athletes and their families are heading off to amusement parks, local shops and awesome local restaurants, rather than just lounging in their hotel rooms,” Smith said. “We’re able to offer all of our tournament attendees terrific experiences both on and off the field, and we look forward to doing just that come Memorial Day.”
