Warren County to Host Big 10 Golf Championships this Week

Warren County, OH (April 18, 2017) – TPC River’s Bend in Warren County, Ohio, will play host to both the 2017 and 2018 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships, the Big Ten Conference has announced. The 2017 championships will be held this week, April 20-23.

“We are very excited to bring the Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships to TPC River’s Bend over the next two years,” said Big Ten Associate Commissioner Wendy Fallen. “It’s a remarkable course, and we know that our students will have an enjoyable and memorable experience.”

“Having the opportunity to host the Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships at TPC River’s Bend is exciting for both the club and our membership, and adds another layer to the great Cincinnati sports scene,” said Jack Hunter, General Manager/Director of Golf for the club. “Over time, we have hosted many high-level events, including PGA Tour Champions, the Web.com Tour, and the National Junior PGA Championship. Bringing competitive collegiate golf at the highest level to TPC River’s Bend is significant. And, to be part of one of the best Division I conferences makes it more special. We are looking forward to some great golf and hope to provide the students a special weekend.”

The Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships have been played annually since 1982, and adopted a 54-hole format beginning in 2012. Eight different schools have won the Big Ten Championship, with Ohio State leading all conference programs with 14 team titles. Indiana has won seven championships, while Michigan State and Purdue have each claimed six titles. Northwestern has won three Big Ten Championships, while Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin have each earned one.

The 2017 event will mark the fourth time in conference history that the Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships have been played in the state of Ohio, but the very first time that they have been held in Warren County. Previously, the 1988, 1994 and 2004 championships were held in Columbus.

Warren County’s reputation as a sporting destination has grown rapidly in recent years, and the industry’s economic impact on the county is expected to reach record heights in 2017. Warren County Sports, a department of the Warren County Convention & Visitors Bureau (WCCVB), announced earlier this year that the county will play host to approximately 95 unique sporting events in 2017, accounting for nearly 200,000 out-of-town visitors, while generating an estimated 78,000 room nights at local hotels and bed and breakfasts.

“One of the driving forces behind our county’s emergence as a sporting destination has been our ability to offer athletes, coaches and those who travel with them awesome experiences both on and off the playing field,” said Phillip S. Smith, President & CEO of the WCCVB. “Our county is fortunate to have an outstanding selection of unique attractions, restaurants and accommodations that visiting athletes and their supporters can enjoy while they aren’t competing, and that makes us a very appealing option for tournament and event planners.”

This week’s Big 10 action begins with practice rounds Thursday in advance of tournament play Friday, Saturday and Sunday. More information can be found at www.bigtenwgc.golfgenius.com.
